Anthropic announced on October 5, 2026 that Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 are now available with in-country inference in India through Amazon Bedrock [1][2]. Requests sent through the India endpoint are processed on servers located inside the country [1][2]. The pitch is aimed at financial institutions, government bodies and large enterprises that must keep AI processing within Indian borders [3]. Anthropic's own site is anthropic.com; the coverage I reviewed gives no separate India sign-up page.

The change is about where the computation happens. Until now, an Indian organisation could reach Claude on Bedrock through global cross-Region inference, which draws capacity from outside India [4]. AWS had set up that route earlier for customers in its Mumbai and Hyderabad regions [5]. The new endpoint keeps inference inside India while still using Bedrock's managed infrastructure [4]. Bedrock deployments in India also include audit trails and access controls for risk and compliance teams [1].

Anthropic had promised this in August. Irina Ghose, the company's managing director for India, said at the launch that Anthropic was following through, and called it a long-term commitment with more hiring and local partnerships to come [2].

"We are delivering on that promise."

The named demand is large. Reliance Industries said local inference would give it the performance, resilience and regulatory alignment needed to use Claude across its operations [1]. The announcement also lists TCS, Kotak Bank, Mahindra Group, CRED, NPCI, the Data Security Council of India and Godrej in connection with the launch, though the coverage does not say what each will deploy [1]. Sandeep Dutta, who leads AWS India and South Asia, framed residency as the factor that decides whether enterprise AI stays in pilots or reaches production [7].

India is also a natural market for Claude. It is Anthropic's second-largest market for Claude.ai, and software development makes up 45.2 percent of the work-related tasks Indian users bring, the highest share recorded in any market [6]. That points to developers and IT services teams as likely early users, though the sources do not break down who will adopt the Bedrock endpoint first.

Several details are missing. The coverage describes the Bedrock India endpoint only. None of the sources I reviewed says that Claude.ai or Anthropic's own API moves onshore, and none gives pricing or names the AWS regions that host the endpoint. The list also shows Opus 5 and Sonnet 5, while newer 5.5 versions of those models are already out [8]. The sources do not say whether the 5.5 models will follow. For compliance teams, the sharper questions are my own analysis: inference location is one part of data residency, so ask where prompts, logs and support access sit as well.

What to Watch Next

Four things will show how far this goes. First, pricing and the exact AWS regions behind the India endpoint, which the launch coverage leaves out. Second, whether the newer Opus and Sonnet 5.5 models reach the endpoint and on what timeline [8]. Third, whether Anthropic extends in-country processing beyond Bedrock to its own API or to Claude.ai. Fourth, which of the named Indian organisations announce production deployments, since a bank or insurer going live is a stronger signal than a partner list [1]. For Indian developers building on Claude today, the immediate step is to check whether your current Bedrock setup uses the global route or the new India endpoint.
