Google's Googlebook laptops went on sale on October 4 in the United States and on October 5 in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia [2]. Pre-orders opened on September 21 [1]. Googlebook is Google's successor to the Chromebook, a laptop platform that runs on the Android technology stack with desktop foundations from ChromeOS and Gemini built in [1][3]. Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo make the first five models [2].
The entry price is the first thing to notice. The Acer Googlebook 14 starts at $899 with a 14.2-inch screen, an Intel Core Ultra 5 or 7 processor, 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage [3]. Dell's XPS Googlebook starts at $999, and other models cost more, though outlets disagree on the exact figures for the Lenovo, ASUS and HP versions [2][4]. Google says every Googlebook includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, which carries 5TB of cloud storage and higher Gemini limits, and that Googlebook OS gets feature drops and updates for up to 10 years [1].
"Designed for Gemini Intelligence and engineered to work with your Android phone."Google, describing Googlebook in its pre-order announcement [1]
The phone link is the core of the pitch. A new Googlebook starts setup by reaching for your Android phone, which passes over settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks and messages with end-to-end encryption [5]. Features such as Cast My Apps, Continue On and Quick Access need a phone running Android 17 or later [4]. Gemini sits in the cursor, in voice notes and in desktop widgets [5]. In other words, the device is built to reward people who already live inside Google's ecosystem, which is my reading rather than a Google statement.
The price puts it in a different market from the Chromebooks it replaces. Forbes describes Googlebook as an upmarket alternative to Chromebooks, which generally cost much less [3]. Technology.org adds that this is a costly year to launch a laptop, noting that Apple's Mac mini entry price has risen 50 percent to $899 [5]. So Google is asking buyers to pay MacBook Air-style money on the strength of Gemini and phone integration, and the included AI Pro year softens the price without telling us what the plan costs afterwards.
For Indian readers, the main fact is absence. Google's announced launch markets do not include India, and there is no official India price or release date [2][6]. Several Indian sites list expected rupee prices, but those are guesses, and one guide warns against simply converting the $899 price because taxes, distribution and local pricing strategy change the final number [7]. Until Google or a hardware partner announces India availability, the only reliable data is the US lineup.
What to Watch Next
Four things to follow. First, an official India announcement from Google or from Acer, ASUS, HP, Lenovo or Dell, which would set the first real rupee price [2][6]. Second, independent reviews that test the battery and Gemini claims on real hardware, since the launch material is from Google and its partners. Third, what Google AI Pro costs once the free year ends, because that decides the true cost of ownership [1]. Fourth, Apple's response: it has announced a product launch for October 13 and is reported to be planning more Mac announcements later in the month [8].
