Mistral AI announced Mistral Large 4 on October 6, 2026, a multimodal open-weight model with 1.05 trillion total parameters and the nickname "Le Chonk" [1][2]. It uses a mixture-of-experts design, so only about 49 billion parameters are active per token, and it adds a separate 1.6 billion parameter vision encoder and a context window of up to 1 million tokens [1]. Today it is available only as a limited preview on Mistral Studio, open to developers, cybersecurity professionals and government bodies, and Mistral plans to publish the weights on October 27 [2]. Some outlets cite dates between October 27 and 31, so treat the exact day as soft [6].

The model was trained from scratch on 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs over two months in Mistral's own European data centres, and it covers more than 160 languages, including every official EU language [2]. Against Mistral Large 3, released in December 2025 with 675 billion total and 41 billion active parameters and a 256K context window, total size is up by about 55 percent and context is four times larger [7]. Mistral's headline claim is about ranking.

"It is the best open weights model from US or Europe on aggregated benchmarks."

The independent snapshot is more modest. Technology Org reports that Large 4 scored 48.05 percent on the Vals Index, placing 32nd of 44 models and ninth among open-weight ones, though it ranked first among open-weight models on Harvey's legal agent benchmark and reached 62 percent on DeepSWE [5]. Mistral itself calls these figures preliminary and expects them to change before October 27 [5]. ODSC adds that the reinforcement learning phase is not finished, so more gains could follow [3]. Those results can sit alongside Mistral's claim only if the eight open-weight models ahead of it are Chinese. The source does not list them, so that is my inference.

The word "open" needs care here. Reuters, as summarized by AIIDEList, reports that Mistral is working with cybersecurity experts and government authorities during the staged period before the weights go public [4]. Even then, Large 4 is not a model for one local GPU: at 8-bit precision the weights alone come to roughly 1.05 terabytes [4]. The payoff, according to Technology Org, is that banks, ministries and manufacturers can run it on their own servers and keep data inside their own region [5]. The sources I reviewed do not state the licence terms.

For Indian readers, the relevant question is not the leaderboard but what the open weights allow. In principle, an Indian bank or government body with enough GPU capacity could host the model itself and keep data in India without relying on a foreign provider's endpoint. That is my analysis, and the hardware bill is steep. The 160-language claim also does not say which Indian languages are covered or how well, so Hindi, Kannada and Marathi performance has to be tested once the weights land [2].

What to Watch Next

Four checkpoints matter. First, whether the weights actually appear on October 27 and under what licence, since commercial terms decide who can use them [2][6]. Second, independent benchmark runs on the released model, which would replace Mistral's preliminary figures [5]. Third, any update after the reinforcement learning phase finishes [3]. Fourth, third-party tests on Indian languages and on realistic hardware costs, because those decide whether a trillion-parameter model is practical outside large labs.
