Global venture funding totaled $159 billion in the third quarter of 2026 across close to 6,000 startups, Crunchbase reported in early October [1]. That is down 25% from the $212 billion raised in the second quarter and up 53% from the $104 billion raised in the third quarter of 2025 [2]. Across the first nine months, startups have raised $679 billion, the highest total for any three-quarter period on record [1]. The market cooled from its first-half peak and still sits far above last year.

AI-driven startups raised $102 billion, or 64% of global venture capital [1]. Crunchbase notes that this share is lower than in the previous two quarters but still 14 percentage points above Q3 2025 [1]. For scale, one analysis of Crunchbase's Q1 data put AI at roughly 80% of about $300 billion that quarter [5]. So AI is taking a smaller slice of a pie that is still very large.

The sharper change is concentration. A record 27 companies raised rounds of $1 billion or more in Q3, up from 16 in Q2 and 14 in Q1 [4]. Those 27 companies took around a third of all venture capital raised in the quarter [1]. Eight companies raised at least $3 billion: Databricks and Safe Superintelligence at $5 billion each, and Crusoe, Moonshot AI, Mistral AI, Nscale, The Boring Co. and Kling AI at more than $3 billion each [1]. There have been 57 billion-dollar rounds so far this year [3].

"Venture funding has also expanded beyond software into physical infrastructure and robotics."
Crunchbase News, Q3 2026 global funding report [1]

Money is also flowing to younger companies at unusual sizes. Late-stage funding totaled $105 billion, down 23% from Q2 but up 73% from a year earlier, while early-stage funding reached $40.6 billion, up 25% year on year [1]. Seed funding came to $13 billion, of which $2.6 billion went into seed rounds of $100 million or more [3]. About half of Q3 capital went to companies founded since 2022 [3]. A seed round of $100 million or more stretches the meaning of the word, which is my reading rather than a Crunchbase claim.

Geography shifted too, with a caveat. US companies took $91 billion in Q3, or 57% of the global total [4]. In Q1 the US share was about 83% of a record quarter that depended on a handful of mega-rounds [5]. The two figures come from different write-ups of Crunchbase data and the quarters are shaped by different deals, so the fall is better read as the effect of fewer giant rounds than as proof that capital is moving abroad.

For Indian founders and readers, the sources do not break out India's share, so the useful reading is indirect. When a third of the money goes to 27 companies, the remaining startups compete for a smaller pool of attention. Exits matter more in that setting, and Inc42's tracker lists Aye Finance and ESDS Software Solution among Indian startups that have taken the IPO route this year [6]. This is context, not a measure of India's funding share.

What to Watch Next

Three numbers will show whether Q3 was a pause or a turn. First, whether the count of billion-dollar rounds stays near 27 in Q4 or falls back toward the 14 to 16 seen in the first half [4]. Second, whether AI's share keeps slipping below 64% or recovers [1]. Third, whether late-stage funding, which fell 23% quarter on quarter, rebounds or keeps cooling [1]. Indian readers should also watch for regional data that finally isolates India, since global totals hide how much of this reaches smaller markets.
