Thursday, October 8, 2026 brought a mix of software launches, financing headlines, energy deals and a physics first. Here is what happened across IT and the wider technology world.

AI and Software

OpenAI is rolling GPT-6 out to every ChatGPT tier. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users got GPT-6 Sol from October 7, and Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna from October 8 [1][2]. The headline feature is Intelligent UI, which lets ChatGPT answer with interactive charts, forms, calculators and tappable buttons instead of plain text [1][2]. OpenAI says it serves more than 1.2 billion people a week, and that GPT-6 Instant starts replying 44 percent sooner than GPT-5.6 Instant on questions that need a web search [1][3]. Enterprise access depends on workplace admin settings [2]. Our explainer on GPT-6 Sol and Luna covers the two models.

In Europe, Mistral AI previewed Mistral Large 4 on October 6, an open-weight model with 1.05 trillion parameters and about 49 billion active per token [4]. Developers can test it in limited preview now, and Mistral plans to publish the weights on October 27 [4][5].

Chips, Money and Power

SpaceX is reported to be seeking $40 billion to buy Nvidia chips, split into about $10 billion in bank loans and $30 billion in investment-grade debt [6]. The Financial Times said Apollo Global Management is expected to lead the deal, with Pimco among lenders in talks, and that it is expected to close in 2027 [7]. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the FT report, then cited a source confirming it [6]. Elon Musk has said SpaceX will use Nvidia hardware exclusively for its data centers, and SpaceX went public in June in an $86 billion IPO [6]. Nvidia closed at a record $239 on October 6, and its market value has been climbing toward $6 trillion [8][9]. This is a report of talks, not a completed purchase.

On the energy side, Google contracted 3,590 megawatts of power from Constellation Energy on the PJM grid, with new nuclear output making up about a quarter [10]. That quarter is an 890 megawatt, 20-year agreement built on upgrades to 11 existing reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with the first power due in 2028 [10][11]. A separate 2,700 megawatt supply agreement covers the rest [11]. Constellation expects more than $4.3 billion of new investment, and both companies called the deal a response to PJM's "bring your own power" proposal for data centers [10].

Constellation CEO Joe Dominguez called the Google arrangement a "model for how technology companies and the energy industry can work together."

Constellation shares rose 12.25 percent to close at $300.40 on the day, and the two companies also signed a five-year technology partnership [13]. Taken together, the SpaceX and Google stories point the same way: chips and electricity are both being financed at enormous scale, which is my reading rather than a claim from either company.

Science

Two independent teams reported the first working nuclear clocks in Nature on October 7. One was led by Thorsten Schumm of TU Wien with Ekkehard Peik of Germany's PTB, and the other by Shiqian Ding of Tsinghua University [14][15]. Both lock a laser to a transition in the nucleus of thorium-229 embedded in calcium fluoride crystals [14][17]. The Vienna clock ran on its own for more than 24 hours [15]. Despite the name, neither clock uses nuclear fission or fusion, and the researchers say nuclear clocks could one day outperform the best atomic clocks but do not yet [16].

India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 10th India Mobile Congress at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, under the theme "Scale Without Boundaries" [18]. He said 5G now reaches every district, with more than 5.5 lakh base stations, and called for ways to identify the source of deepfakes and AI-generated content [18][19]. The event runs October 7 to 10 and expects more than 1.5 lakh attendees from over 100 countries [20].

On chips, India's Semicon 2.0 scheme carries an outlay of ₹1.27 lakh crore, and guidelines issued on September 17 bar approved projects from selling or mortgaging assets until the whole project is in commercial production [21]. Sumitomo Chemical signed an MoU to study a stable supply of semiconductor materials in India, including a possible chemicals facility [22]. Japanese suppliers are also moving in, though one Horiba executive said India still lacks enough specialised semiconductor skills [23].

What to Watch Next

Four things to follow. First, how free ChatGPT users respond to Intelligent UI as GPT-6 Luna reaches them [1]. Second, whether SpaceX's financing is confirmed with terms, since today's story is still based on sources [6][7]. Third, how PJM treats data centers under its bring-your-own-power proposal, because the Google deal was built around it [10]. Fourth, whether independent labs can reproduce the nuclear clock results, which is the next test for the two teams [14][16].
