Apple began testing Apple Intelligence in mainland China on November 4, 2026 through the iOS developer beta, with Alibaba's Qwen model powering selected features in Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence [1][3]. The public release follows in December with iOS 27.3 [1][2][3]. It is Apple Intelligence's first availability in China, and the new Siri AI shown at WWDC is not included [1][3].

What Apple and Alibaba announced

Dataconomy reports that Apple and Alibaba announced the arrangement on October 31, while Computerworld's article is dated November 2 and says a developer beta is expected soon [1][2]. China's Cyberspace Administration cleared the service in July 2026, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology approved the use of Alibaba's models on the iPhone in October [1][2]. Support for other platforms still awaits approvals [3].

One analyst quoted by Dataconomy calls it the first use of a Chinese large language model as a main system-level AI by a major global hardware maker [1]. Analysts at 24/7 Wall St. argue that the free sign-in mainly adds users for Alibaba and does not produce direct revenue [1].

How Qwen fits into Apple Intelligence

Qwen handles selected experiences and is optional [1][2][3]. In Siri it supplies broader knowledge for some requests, Writing Tools adds Compose with Qwen for text and images from prompts, and Visual Intelligence adds Ask Qwen to identify objects and places through the camera [1]. Users sign in with an Apple account or a Qwen account, and Alibaba says requests and responses will not be used to train its models [1][2][3].

It is not clear whether Qwen requests will route through Apple's Private Cloud Compute in China, and Computerworld notes that Chinese government approval is needed for ongoing updates [2]. The Computerworld piece is opinion-style analysis. For another recent AI integration story, see Claude Haiku 5.5 Launch: $0.10 Input, 1M Context, Benchmarks.

Features, devices and languages

The first release includes Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, with AirPods translation for face-to-face conversations [3]. It also covers Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, Photos features such as Clean Up and natural-language search, Mail priority messages and summaries, Smart Reply, notification summaries, and Type to Siri [2][3]. The sources disagree on image features: Dataconomy and iClarified list Genmoji, and Computerworld says Image Playground is not included [1][2][3].

Computerworld cites Counterpoint Research data that iPhone sales in China rose 29% year on year in the three weeks after the 18 Pro launch while the wider smartphone sector fell 21%, largely because of rising memory prices [2]. I could not verify those figures independently.

Pricing and how to get it

None of the sources lists a price, and the Qwen features are optional behind a sign-in [1][3]. Testing happens through the developer beta, so ordinary users wait for iOS 27.3 in December [1][2][3]. Apple Intelligence requires a supported iPhone and a matching device language [3].

Limitations and what to watch

The advanced Siri functions shown at WWDC are excluded, and Computerworld attributes their absence to market speculation about political pressure without confirmed reasons [1][2]. Features may change before December, and the sources differ on the announcement date and on image tools. This article reports company and press accounts and does not cover how the system performs, since no independent testing has been published.

For readers outside China, nothing changes. Apple's separate Siri AI developer preview for app makers is a different program. For another open-weight model release, see Mistral Large 4 Preview: 1.05T Open-Weight MoE, Specs and Pricing.
