MUMBAI: Paytm parent One 97 Communications reported a net profit of Rs 225 crore for the September quarter on operating revenue of Rs 2,648 crore, up 28.5% from a year earlier, with a record EBITDA of Rs 270 crore.[5][7] It was the first quarter in which the EBITDA margin crossed 10%, at 10.2% on Depth Grid's calculation. Net profit for the first half rose to Rs 445 crore.[11][13] Management said a merchant discount rate on select UPI payments, due after Diwali, would be upside rather than the core of its business.[9][7]
Q2 FY27 Results at a Glance

| Operating revenue (Rs crore) | 2,648 | 2,061 | +28.5% | +8% |
| EBITDA (Rs crore) | 270 | 142 | +90% | +33% (from 203) |

Total expenditure rose to Rs 2,531 crore from Rs 2,062 crore a year earlier. Indirect expenses fell to 46% of revenue from 52%.[12][6]
Reading the 10x Headline Carefully
The 10x rise rests on a year-ago profit of Rs 21 crore.[6][14] The same reports show profit before exceptional items of Rs 211 crore a year ago and Rs 229 crore now, a rise of 9%, which implies that exceptional items or a reporting issue depressed the base.[8][9] Depth Grid could not verify the Q2 FY26 net profit figure against Paytm's own filing, so readers should compare against the company's results release before quoting the multiple.
| Basis | Q2 FY26 | Q2 FY27 | Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reported EBITDA (Rs crore) | 142 | 270 | +90% |
| Comparable EBITDA excluding PIDF (Rs crore) | 68 | 258 | +279% |
| Reported revenue (Rs crore) | 2,061 | 2,648 | +28.5% |
| Comparable revenue growth excluding PIDF | Not stated | Not stated | +33% |
Source: iTechGuides and Business News Week.[8][5] PIDF is the Payments Infrastructure Development Fund incentive.
On the comparable basis, which excludes the Payments Infrastructure Development Fund incentive, EBITDA nearly quadrupled to Rs 258 crore.[5][8] Depth Grid's arithmetic shows the incentive contributed about Rs 74 crore to EBITDA in Q2 FY26 and about Rs 12 crore in Q2 FY27, so the reported 90% growth understates the improvement in underlying operations.
Business Drivers: Payments, Financial Services and Scale
| Metric | Q2 FY27 | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Payment services revenue | Rs 1,434 crore | +25% YoY |
| Net payment revenue | Rs 644 crore | +21% YoY, comparable basis |
| Financial services distribution revenue | Rs 912 crore | +49% YoY |
| Key financial services customers | 8.8 lakh | +35% YoY |
| Monthly transacting users | 8.5 crore | +1 crore YoY, largest addition in nearly three years |
| Registered merchants | 5.2 crore | +10% YoY |
| Merchants on subscription plans | 1.64 crore | +27 lakh YoY |
| Paytm UPI growth | +42% YoY | 2.2 times industry growth; share gain for sixth straight quarter |
Source: Paytm results as reported by Business News Week, Vie Stories, YourStory and Kotak Neo.[5][12][6][10]
On Depth Grid's calculation, financial services distribution is about 34% of operating revenue and payment services about 54%, so lending and wealth distribution are now a third of the business. Payment processing margin stayed above 4 basis points, according to the company.[5]
UPI MDR: Upside, With Open Questions
Paytm said the National Payments Corporation of India has notified a merchant discount rate framework, with implementation expected after Diwali on a date still to be announced.[9] Management gave an indicative estimate of about 2.5 basis points of margin lift and described the MDR as upside rather than the foundation of the business, expecting economics to stabilise two to three quarters after implementation.[7][9] As Depth Grid reported earlier, NPCI deferred the charge on October 13, two days before its planned start. Listed fintechs moved sharply on the news.
The 2.5 basis point figure is a management estimate and not revenue already earned. Reports also flag the cost of default loss guarantees and the unfinalised MDR rollout as variables for later quarters.[8][9] Guarantee rules come from the Reserve Bank of India. The final MDR date will come from NPCI.
Cash, Paytm Cloud and the Share Price
Paytm's cash balance was Rs 13,617 crore, about 5.1 times quarterly operating revenue on Depth Grid's calculation.[13][7] The board approved investing up to Rs 500 crore in Paytm Cloud Technologies, a wholly owned subsidiary, which will invest up to Rs 500 crore in Paytm Singapore for working capital and expansion over the next 12 months.[7][14]
The shares rose about 2% to Rs 1,686 on the NSE on Tuesday after the results, according to Kotak Neo.[10] Depth Grid has not verified the closing price. Intraday moves can change quickly.
How New-Age Listed Companies Compare in Q2 FY27
| Company | Net Profit or Loss (Rs crore) | Revenue (Rs crore) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|

Sources: company results as reported by The Week, Business Standard, Upstox and Inc42.[15][16][17][18] Revenue bases and definitions differ by company; Eternal consolidated revenue is also reported as Rs 24,621 crore by one outlet.
The group now spans Groww and Paytm at the profitable end and Eternal newly profitable with Blinkit EBITDA positive. Swiggy and Urban Company are still spending heavily on quick-service growth.[15][16][17][18]
Strategic Implications for Fintech
Paytm's quarter shows a payments business whose profit is increasingly driven by financial services distribution and operating leverage and less by payment fees alone. With UPI processing margins thin at above 4 basis points, an MDR would matter more for margin than for revenue, which is why management frames it as upside.

Common Questions and Direct Answers
What were Paytm's Q2 FY27 results?
Paytm's parent One 97 Communications reported net profit of Rs 225 crore for the September 2026 quarter on operating revenue of Rs 2,648 crore, up 28.5%. EBITDA rose 90% to a record Rs 270 crore, an EBITDA margin of 10.2%, the first time it has crossed 10%. First-half net profit was Rs 445 crore.
Is the 10x jump in Paytm's net profit a fair comparison?
Not entirely. Reports cite a year-earlier profit of Rs 21 crore, but the same reports put profit before exceptional items at Rs 211 crore a year ago and Rs 229 crore now, a rise of 9%. That implies large exceptional items in the base or an error in it. Depth Grid could not verify the base against Paytm's filing.
How could the UPI MDR affect Paytm?
NPCI has notified a merchant discount rate framework for select UPI merchant payments, with implementation expected after Diwali on a date still to be announced. Paytm's management estimates an indicative margin lift of 2.5 basis points and calls the MDR upside rather than the foundation of its business. It expects economics to settle over two to three quarters.
How much cash does Paytm have and what is the Rs 500 crore investment?
Paytm reported a cash balance of Rs 13,617 crore as of September 2026. Its board approved investing up to Rs 500 crore in its wholly owned subsidiary Paytm Cloud Technologies, which will in turn invest up to Rs 500 crore in Paytm Singapore for working capital and expansion over the next 12 months. The Rs 500 crore is about 3.7% of cash.
How do Paytm's results compare with other listed new-age companies?
Groww's parent reported a Rs 725.6 crore profit and Eternal a Rs 125 crore profit on Rs 24,138 crore of revenue. Swiggy posted a Rs 922 crore loss on Rs 7,571 crore of revenue and Urban Company a Rs 182.48 crore loss. Paytm's Rs 225 crore profit sits between Eternal and Groww. Shares rose about 2% to Rs 1,686 on the NSE on Tuesday.
