Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 13 and agreed to sell some assets to Disney for $20 million, after five years as one of the most used consumer chatbot platforms [1].
The day also brought the arrest of an OpenAI employee over a hidden recording device, Meta's first frontier model and a $1.3 billion sale of Bumble. This digest covers AI, security and apps.
- Character.AI will keep running during a court-supervised sale, but has no buyer yet and will wind down the platform if no bid arrives [1].
- The US Justice Department charged an OpenAI employee over a hidden recorder in an executive conference room. He has not been convicted [2].
- Meta's Muse Wonder costs $4 per million input tokens, and Bumble's $1.3 billion deal would take the dating app private [4][5].
Character.AI files for Chapter 11 and sells assets to Disney
Character.AI, the platform where users chat with AI characters they create, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 13 and agreed to sell some assets to The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) for $20 million [1]. A court filing puts its assets and liabilities each between $50 million and $100 million, and PitchBook data cited by TechCrunch shows it raised more than $193 million [1].
Disney also receives a non-exclusive perpetual licence to the technology. Former Character.AI staff who joined Disney last month, along with the company's former chief executive Karandeep Singh Anand, will provide transition services [1]. Chief executive Colin Adams said the company will keep operating through a court-supervised sale expected to close in late November or early December [1].
There is no bid for the business yet. Adams said the platform will be wound down if no workable proposal emerges [1]. The company reached unicorn status in 2022, and Google struck a $2.7 billion deal in 2024 to license its models [1]. It later faced lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny over child safety, settled some of the suits and banned minors [1].
TechCrunch's reading is that consumer AI products are hard to scale and monetise. High engagement can hurt, because AI costs rise with usage and add pressure to charge users [1].
An OpenAI employee is charged over a hidden recording device
The US Justice Department says Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, a Saudi national employed by OpenAI, was arrested on October 9 and charged with using a device to intercept oral communications [2]. The charge follows the discovery of a hidden recorder in an executive conference room at an OpenAI building in San Francisco [2]. He made his first court appearance on October 13 and has not been convicted [2].
According to the complaint, OpenAI staff found the device on or about September 30. It was plugged into a USB port behind a television, hidden in toilet paper and holding encrypted contents, and OpenAI judged it had been installed around September 28 [2]. Prosecutors allege a second, similar device was found in a bag he left unattended on October 5 [2]. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine [2].
OpenAI said it has no indication that he accessed model weights, source code or customer data, and that it used its own AI models to analyse the device [3]. FBI Director Kash Patel said the alleged scheme aimed to capture sensitive communications about the company's super intelligence technology [2]. TechCrunch could not reach Alfozan or his lawyer for comment [3].
Sources differ slightly on his role. TechCrunch, citing OpenAI, says he worked on the product team, while the Justice Department calls him an engineer [2][3]. Depth Grid covered OpenAI's own agent decisions in OpenAI Shelved Its Next Model Over Lying. Then Shipped Agents on the Old One Anyway.
Meta releases Muse Wonder, its first frontier model
Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: META) released Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full on October 12, which its Superintelligence Lab presents as the company's first frontier model [4]. Meta's own testing puts both at benchmark scores comparable to Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra, and these are Meta's figures rather than independent results [4].
Through the Meta Model API, Wonder costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, roughly the price of GPT-6 Sol or Opus 5.5 [4]. Wonder Full is limited to Muse Code subscribers and will not be sold through the API [4]. Both models power the Muse agent, and Meta stresses what it calls active memory, the ability to retain what matters to a user over weeks and months [4].
The models were trained at Meta's Prometheus data centre in Ohio, which came online earlier this year [4]. Depth Grid's October 8 digest covered the GPT-6 news that Meta now benchmarks against.
Bumble agrees to a $1.3 billion sale to Ithaca Holdings
Bumble Inc. (NASDAQ: BMBL) announced on October 13 that it agreed to a $1.3 billion acquisition by Ithaca Holdings, which would take the dating app private [5]. A board committee recommended the deal after reviewing strategic options, and founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, who did not take part in the vote, plans to stay involved [5].
Second-quarter revenue fell 15.2% year on year to $211 million, and paying users dropped 16.4% to about 3.2 million [5]. Bumble went public in 2021 at a valuation of roughly $14 billion [5]. Wolfe Herd has said the company is developing a new way to interact that could eventually replace swiping [5].
