Source: NPCI data as reported by Entrackr, Inc42 and Business Standard.[4][5][11] Average payment size and daily figures for September and October 2025 are Depth Grid calculations.

Monthly volume rose 5.8% from September and value rose 7.4%, although October has 31 days against 30 in September, so the daily average gain was a smaller 2.5% in volume.[4] The previous monthly value high was Rs 29.90 lakh crore in May 2026, according to The Morning Voice.[8]

The Milestones

The busiest day was October 9 with 873 million transactions, ahead of Navratri. Volumes stayed elevated through October 19, the day before Dussehra.[8][9] On Depth Grid's calculation, 822 million transactions a month works out to roughly 9,500 a second on average. The 873 million peak works out to about 10,100 a second.

The month also marked the first time UPI processed more than Rs 1 lakh crore a day on average, up from about Rs 97,900 crore in September and about Rs 88,000 crore in October 2025, on Depth Grid's calculation.[4][11] Elets BFSI noted that October was the first month in which UPI processed more than Rs 30 lakh crore.[6]

Volume Is Outrunning Value

Transactions grew 23% year on year, but value grew only 16%, so the average payment became smaller.[4][6] On Depth Grid's calculation, the average ticket was about Rs 1,238 in October 2026, compared with about Rs 1,220 in September and about Rs 1,318 in October 2025, a fall of about 6% on the year.

That pattern matters for the merchant discount rate. The government has said that transactions up to Rs 2,000 make up more than 96% of UPI merchant volume. The framework applies to select merchant payments above that level.[13][15] A falling average ticket suggests most payments sit well below the threshold.

The MDR: Deferred, Not Settled

The NPCI deferred the 0.4% merchant discount rate on select merchant payments above Rs 2,000 on October 13, two days before its planned start. It said it would apply immediately after Diwali on a date to be notified.[15] One report suggested that the pre-Diwali deferral helped festive payments, but the sources reviewed do not show an NPCI statement saying so.[10] The October figures therefore contain no MDR effect. The framework still includes free person-to-person transfers and zero MDR for small merchants.[13]

Paytm said after its September-quarter results that it estimates a margin lift of about 2.5 basis points from the MDR and that its own UPI volume grew 42% year on year, about 2.2 times the industry.[14] At the time of the framework's announcement, Citi estimated an incremental annual revenue pool of Rs 16,000 crore to Rs 17,000 crore for the payments ecosystem.[16]

Who Leads: App Shares

NPCI's October app-wise breakdown had not been released at the time of the reports.[4] In the September data, three apps together accounted for nearly 86% of transactions through listed UPI apps, according to Entrackr.[4] PhonePe and Google Pay are the largest apps. Paytm has been gaining share for six straight quarters, the company said.[14] The October split will show whether festive volumes shifted share between apps.

UPI's gain is part of a broader festive-season pattern, with GST collections, vehicle sales and consumer goods demand all reported higher.[12] Payment firms are also tightening security, with PhonePe, Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU deploying automated threat detection amid rising cyberattacks and fraud, according to the same digest.

Strategic Implications for Fintech

The data show a payments rail growing in both volume and value even as the average payment shrinks, which favours low-cost, high-frequency use. For listed and unlisted payment companies, the commercial question is how much of this volume can ever be monetised. The MDR decision will answer part of it.

Common Questions and Direct Answers

How many UPI transactions were there in October 2026?

UPI processed a record 25.47 billion transactions worth Rs 31.53 lakh crore in October 2026, according to NPCI data released on November 1. Volume rose 5.8% from September and 23% from October 2025. Value rose 7.4% on the month and 16% on the year. It was the first month in which monthly value crossed Rs 30 lakh crore.

What milestones did UPI cross in October?

Average daily value crossed Rs 1 lakh crore for the first time, at Rs 1,01,707 crore, up from about Rs 97,900 crore in September. Daily volume averaged 822 million transactions. The single busiest day was October 9 with 873 million transactions ahead of Navratri. Volumes stayed high through October 19, the day before Dussehra.

Why did transaction value grow more slowly than volume?

Volume grew 23% year on year while value grew 16%, which means the average payment became smaller. On Depth Grid's calculation the average ticket was about Rs 1,238 in October 2026 against about Rs 1,318 a year earlier, a fall of about 6%. More small everyday payments, including festive purchases, pull the average down.

How does the UPI MDR affect these numbers?

NPCI has deferred its merchant discount rate on select merchant payments above Rs 2,000 until after Diwali, on a date to be notified. One report credited the pre-Diwali deferral with supporting transactions, but that is an interpretation and not an NPCI statement. The October figures do not yet include any MDR effect.

Which apps lead UPI payments?

NPCI's October app-wise breakdown had not been released at the time of the reports. In the September data, three apps together accounted for nearly 86% of transactions through listed UPI apps, according to Entrackr. PhonePe and Google Pay are the largest. Paytm has said its UPI volume grew 42% year on year in the September quarter.
